Obstacles - Get over them

September 7th, 2008

As a personal trainer I hear lots of excuses. I don’t have time, I have friends visiting, I can’t get into a routine… It’s mostly a lot of “I can’ts…” or “I don’ts…”

If losing weight or getting in shape is a priority, then just make it one. You can make time, just slot it in your schedule. And yes, it sometimes means getting up at insane hours and working out really early or really late. Many elite runners get their workouts in at 4:30 AM. And many of them also have evening workouts and a full-time job in the middle. Being an athlete is a priority in their life. And yeah, they make huge sacrifices. You don’t have to make huge sacrifices just to get and be healthy. One hour, four or five times per week is all you need. It’s not much.

Sometimes being healthy means spending 3 hours in the kitchen on Sundays to make your food for the entire week. You know those fitness models you see in Oxygen? Well, they don’t let themselves get hungry and think “hmmm, what am I going to have for lunch today?” They have it all mapped out - when and what they eat. They carry food with them everywhere and never get stranded without the proper fuel for their day. Likewise, you too should have a good idea of what and when you’re going to eat during the day. Nutrition is about 80% of what we look like. “You are what you eat” is so true.

Sure, sometimes people will think you’re nuts, or extreme. I said no to cake in the office last week and someone said “Man, don’t you hate those healthy people making us look bad.” So what? Make being healthy a priority. Just do it. Tell me what you think and post a comment. Is it not that easy?

Buy a Bike

July 30th, 2008

This summer has been by far, hands, down, the most fabulous summer I’ve ever experienced since I moved to Halifax 10 years ago. The weather had been fantastic - sun, heat and even a bit of humidity!

I strongly encourage you to get fit while getting where you want and need to go - buy a bike. A nice little commuter bike (hybrids with slick tires are best) will do just fine. I ride to work and back every day, and sometimes ride over to Park Lane Nubody’s in Halifax for a workout with my trainer, Luke. In an average week I ride 50-70 km, or 25-60 minutes per day depending on my schedule. That’s an extra bonus when it comes to my calorie-burning goals for the week.

Halifax and Dartmouth are generally pretty safe places to ride and they’re full of hills to keep you busy and challenged on the bike. And to top it off, biking makes you feel like a kid again!!
